This picture was taken in Colorado in 2005. The one on the left was developed right after it was taken using the tools and skills I had at the time. The one of the right is the same picture that was developed 13 years later with new tools and skills.
There is always a gap between the subject and the picture. Every camera distorts the image. It cannot “see” as much as the human eye. The eye can see a far greater range of shadow and light than any camera. The human eye can see a broader range of color and detail than most cameras. Every picture is a distorted representation of what the photographer saw when they triggered the shutter.
To make matters even more complicated, every eye sees a different image even before the picture is taken. Some eyes see more detail than others. Some eyes see colors differently. For some, the “eye of the soul” sees great beauty while the physical or mind’s eye sees only ordinariness or ugliness.
This is why the photographer needs to have the tools and skills to translate what they “see” to the image on the screen or paper. Processing re-captures the image as the photographer experienced it. It seeks to capture the feeling the photographer had when they looked at the subject. Color, contrast, depth of field, framing, exposure, and sharpness all come into play as the image is re-created. The image seeks to share a brief moment in time of a particular place for a particular person.
Over time, every photographer acquires new tools and skills. Their images change and develop. But one thing remains the same, they strive to capture and share the beauty of that moment and all that it offers to the human spirit. That image leads us into the realm where wonder, joy, and mystery fill our souls with all that is sacred. The beauty in that moment invites the photographer and the viewer to share a very special place and time in the presence of the holy.
Each of us has the opportunity to share the beauty in our lives. We have something to offer whether we capture that beauty in images, sounds, tastes, words, or experiences. If you feel you do not do it very well, share it any way. Beauty will show through. And by doing so you will acquire the tools and skills to enable you to more effectively share the beauty that exists within your own heart. Accept the invitation that beauty offers and let it shine through your life.
Keep sharing the beauty in your life!
